Then the bond their own people outlawed six generations ago snaps between them, in their own house, over a table of fish. There is a rite that would dim it. It costs him everything and her nothing, and it needs one word from her to be lawful.
Five people who love them offer her the exit, and the price falls every time it is offered. She has never refused anybody anything. This is the winter she finds out what she is.
A complete story with its own ending. You need nothing to read it and it gives away no book. Adult fantasy romance, open door, medium-high heat. Nobody dies in it; the novels carry the creature on the mountain and the Wardens with the knife, and this one deliberately does not.
